Review for Hester J Hodgdon Libraries For All Foundation, Fort Collins, CO, USA
The Hester J. Hodgdon (HJH) Libraries for All is a Colorado based 501©3 nonprofit Foundation whose mission supports library and educational opportunities in Nicaraguan communities. Via the main library in the town of San Juan del Sur, and the extensive bookmobile service and satellite libraries established by the Foundation in the surrounding rural communities, HJH Libraries for All offers critical educational materials and literacy programs that would otherwise not be available to the people of this region.
I have been involved with the Foundation since 2007 when I co-developed and subsequently accompanied a University of Maryland (UMD) study abroad course to Nicaragua to work with the Foundation’s library in the town of San Juan del Sur and surrounding rural communities. This was the first of seven short-term UMD study abroad classes facilitated by Jane Mirandette, the Foundation President. I am currently a Foundation board member and active in fundraising and financial issues. I also bring my expertise as a retired academic librarian and deep knowledge of Nicaragua and Latin America to the work of the Foundation.
