A few years ago, a childhood friend of mine was tragically shot and killed by an off-duty police officer in Alexandria, VA. He was an only child with a promising future who was just getting ready to begin college. His passion was music. He played the guitar, and I'll never forget his trademark Metallica shirts. Music was my friend's life, and when we lost him and the community was mourning, the family made it a point to involve Guitars Not Guns. As an individual who has not only worked with children as a mentor and tutor, but also as someone who has grown up to be a journalist in the music industry in New York City, I see firsthand the positive effects that being involved with a strong music program can have on youth, especially when the program is in the hands of responsible, strong-willed adults with a sense of values and morals. That is exactly what Guitars Not Guns brings to the table. Responsible adults, teaching musical skills to kids in need. If I still lived in Virginia, I would certainly be more directly involved with the local chapter of GnG, not only to honor my good friend's memory, but because music was such a motivating force in my own childhood.
