Review for The Borgen Project, Tacoma, WA, USA

Rating: 4 stars

I enjoyed my time interning with The Borgen Project! I was a writing intern, so I wrote weekly articles for their blog and magazine. They had us propose article ideas and do research, and I like the routine and process of writing about important topics in poverty and global issues. They also gave us a Google document with weekly assignments that we had to complete, like calling and emailing Congress, options for lobbying, social media posts, and so on. We had to fundraise $500 from family and friends, which I didn't find too demanding, but for those who aren't used to fundraising or asking family and friends, it may be a way to get outside of your comfort zone.

I really liked volunteering from home (it is unpaid), and I would say that the only downside is not really seeing other interns or management--it is a bit hard to develop personal relationships and rapport since there are so many interns all virtual, but it is possible through meetings and social media! And they were always quick to respond to emails, set up virtual meetings for questions, and were overall very accommodating. I even thought about extending my time there and volunteering more.

I think the mission of The Borgen Project is important and impactful, and the experience was valuable (as it should for being unpaid). At the end, they did offer to be a reference for future jobs as well!
