Review for Assistance League of Omaha Nebraska Inc, Omaha, NE, USA
In 2014, the organizers of the ALO Operation School Bell Program realized they had many parents who came to their events that did not speak English and were relying on their children to navigate the OSB rules and routines.
They approached me as a person who works with multilingual students to help organize and support student interpreters. Over the last seven years, Omaha South High School has provided hundreds of hours of interpreters for this program and the parents. My students love the opportunity to give back to their community. Many remember their own experiences with OSB and are happy to be on the giving end of the program. My students' self-worth as multilingual members of society increases as they learn how much they have to offer.
Parents are appreciative of the additional support and clarity with which they receive the information. The children receiving the clothing are not pressured to work through complex processes on behalf of their parents just because they speak each of the languages neither their parents nor the ALO ladies speak.
This innovative idea took vision to realize, teamwork to put together and organization to maintain. Everyone involved has shared positive experiences with this collaboration and Omaha South High is excited to continue working with the Assistance League of Omaha provided student interpreters and shopping assistants for a long time to come.
