Review for The Borgen Project, Tacoma, WA, USA
When my advisors let me know that I would be using a big chunk of my resume to write about The Borgen Project, they weren't wrong! To be transparent, before I applied to be a Political Affairs Intern, I read some interesting reviews about TBP because "it wasn't what [they] expected." But, I think many miss the point of what it's like to work for a non-profit. To work in a non-profit setting, it means that you are constantly thinking of new ideas to meet your objectives. In this case, my objectives were advocacy, education, mobilization, and issuing strong messages about global poverty. I am a strong advocate of fighting for the world's poor and providing them with resources that first world countries have access to, and as an advocate, one must remain strong willed to their goals. The Borgen Project allowed me to speak about my interests at my local town hall and also meet with Congressional leaders to discuss poverty legislation. I was able to make connections with other non-profit organizations in my area and attend virtual conferences. Some people may be frustrated about the goal of raising $500. At times, I was doubting myself to not reach it, but that's where the mentality of a non-profit setting comes in. Find a different method! That's what I did and raised over $1,000. I don't think deadlines should scare people when they apply to be an intern for TBP because in the end, this organization enhanced my presentation and communication skills, my barely-there knowledge of marketing, and how to build connections. If you are really passionate about fighting for global poverty, I would recommend interning with The Borgen Project!
