My Nonprofit Reviews
Review for Artists For World Peace Inc, Middletown, CT, USA
A good friend invited my wife to join her on a mission organized by AFWP to provide free eye care to the Native Americans on the Rosebud Reservation in North Dakota in June 2019. While my wife had medical care experience, I had none. Nevertheless, AFWP apparently appreciated my enthusiasm and allowed me to come along as a volunteer. This was my first mission experience. Due to an unexpected layover caused by weather, we arrived in Rosebud a day late just in time to join the AFWP team for dinner at a nearby restaurant. The moment we entered the dining room, we were met with cheers, warm welcome and hugs from a group of about 40 volunteers, most of whom we had never met. It was an amazing experience transforming our travel-weary moods into a feeling of warmth and elation. That set the mood for the balance of the week. The vast majority of the volunteers were medical professionals specializing in eye care. Ray trained me to operate an autorefractor, and I spent the balance of the week meeting and conducting autorefractor eye exams on hundreds of local patients. The autorefractor exam was just the start of a streamlined process that aided the medical professional volunteers to perform their eye examinations on each patient. The patients were so appreciative of the work we were doing. I believe the team provided eye exams to almost 1000 patients during that week. Each patient that needed corrective lenses, received a free pair of eyeglasses. The energy and enthusiasm of the volunteers and AFWP's leadership is infectious. After our trip I gladly accepted an invitation to join AFWP's board and to return to Rosebud as a volunteer for the next eye clinic.
