My Nonprofit Reviews

Review for Blount County Humane Society, Maryville, TN, USA
This organization does contribute to the welfare of animals. The organization holds weekly adoption events for animals it cares for in it's foster network. The organization transports animals out of the area for adoption in needed areas. The organization runs a thrift store to help support these initiatives, along with events and donation jars around the area.
However, with all that being said, I no longer support this organization. After my donation, I found that this organization does not have a functioning board of directors. One person, the founder, was authorized to spend money out of the accounts, no annual reports were available, and policies were not written to follow for assisting the public in animal issues.
There was also an atmosphere of religious overtones when moral decisions were made. Nothing wrong with that, but that is not advertised in the organizations mandates. If your convictions are such, you will likely not mind.
In closing, I think the volunteers are the heart and soul of this organization. Without their dedication and commitment, there would be an empty space needing filled. Each and every one is there for the benefit and welfare of animals, just as I was.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
I fostered three animals that were successfully adopted through this organization.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
I would ask for full disclosure of all finances at this organization. I would also ask for a list of board members and directors. I would also consider a change in leadership at the organization. A leader that is accessible to it's organizational members and members of the community. A leader that is willing to work positively with other animal welfare groups in the community.

What specific problem, purpose, priority, or project prompted your gift?
Since it's inception, the organization has been raising funds to build a "no-kill" animal shelter in the community. The organization was founded in 2003, but the status of how close to this goal the organization is has never been publicized.
Why did you make your donation at this time?
I learned about this organization because my spouse was volunteering with this organization. I felt it needed my contribution and thought it was a just cause. In hindsight, I should have asked finance questions prior to my donation. I let my heart make a decision that my mind should have.
What would you tell others about this organization?
I would urge them to ask for the latest IRS 990 and 1023 forms. I would ask for the organization's annual returns, when was the last board meeting and who was in attendance. Who are the decision makers of the organization. Do not settle for verbal answers. Ask for hard copy documents to inspect. These are disclosure documents that the public is entitled to have access to. Sources of revenue are donation jars, a paypal account, a thrift store, and seasonal fundraisers. Expenditures are veterinary bills, costs associated to running the thrift store and organization animal welfare programs.
