Review for CHARLESTON ANIMAL SOCIETY, North Charleston, SC, USA

Rating: 5 stars

This organization has grown tremendously over the 20 years I've been interacting with them. This is thru the incredible work of the board, employees, vets, volunteers and community. We were new comers to Charleston in 2000 when we adopted a pair of sister kittens. Shortly afterwards we adopted a pup and 3 1/2 years ago I adopted my latest little joy from them. I have participated in many fundraisers, community events and assisted with projects to assist the site to make it more functional for fur babes looking for homes and the prospective new hooman families.. I've watched them in amazement launch rescue operations to states for hurricane relocation, large scale assistance when animals need rescuing and also to assist with transporting animals. This is such a blessing to our community, and the families and animals passing thru the doors. Education for school groups, spay and neuter clinics and animal training. They assist with building safe fencing so animals don't need to stay leashed, assistance with providing families in need with food for the pets (we all need help sometimes). So many animals which have been victims of abuse, neglect or accidents are truly blessed to make it into their team of dedicated veterinarians. There are so many stories of animals saved by these real heroes. Books have been written! Fundraising is year round to provide animals with all the necessary medications and treatments they need to heal, thrive and move on to new homes. The foster network is amazing and incredible. This organization is never lazy... they are always thinking outside the box with outreach, technology, education, fundraising, transportation (did you hear about the wonderful volunteer who flew a lovely dog back to his home state with family members after surgery and recovery when it was injured and the owner killed in a bicycle accident while passing thru Charleston? My wonderful little chorkie (chihuahua yorkie mix) was nurtured and fostered by Kay Hyman, the Director of Community Engagement at CAS and her daughter Zoe till I was able to adopt. I am so thankful they thought of me to adopt this little baby. She has traveled with my in my work to be my companion when I came back to the hotel, for weeks at a time. She has flown with me for work as well. With Covid, she is home with me, ruling as a Queen at her little 3.5lbs and running her big brother, a 115lb German Shepherd like a boss. I named this little one Zoe, after Kay's daughter for the love and care they gave my baby while she was with them. Zoe has had visits with Kay a couple of times and totally remembered her. We are due another reunion as it has been a couple of years now and I KNOW she will remember Kay... so much love we in Charleston have for CAS.
