We have a 32 year old daughter with Down Syndrome. Once she turned 21 and was no longer under the umbrella or our local public school system and county Intermediate unit, opportunities for social interaction became difficult to facilitate and manage. Our daughter loves to perform and a neighbor had informed us of the existence of a theater company for adults with developmental disabilities. After a number of years on the waiting list for Harmony Theater, we got the good news that there was an opening for Sarah. Ever since the fall of 2013, Sarah has been participating in and performing with her colleagues at Harmony Theater. They do one concert and one play per year. Their weekly rehearsals allow not only for much needed social connection, but have provided our daughter with ongoing opportunities for skill development, growth in her interpersonal skills, to say nothing of how it has positively affected her self image and self esteem.
In the intervening years I have become involved in the Board of Directors and have been the Chairperson of the board for 3 years. Our board strives to keep Harmony growing and adapting to the changing landscape for non profits and adapting to the ever changing needs of our members. I encourage anyone who is interested in the growth of Non Profits to research this organization and get involved.
