Review for South Bay Community Services, Chula Vista, CA, USA
My personal experience as a Southwest Middle School after school tutor through South Bay Community Services is one that I will always remember. Next time I have an opening in my schedule I will be their again to experience such a rewarding opportunity. Being able to mentor students at that level made me feel like I was in middle school all over again. Such an opportunity is priceless on my menu. The positive energy kids are so good at transmitting made me contribute to it and make it grow. It was great to help them with their math homework and to inform them about all of the career possibilities that are out their waiting for them to scoop them up.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
Giving me the opportunity to extend my capabilities beyond the academic arena in an exciting and fun environment. As a mature adult that recognizes the value of such opportunities I realize that I learned more from the students than they learned from me. Now that's a great deal.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
Strive towards designing a one on one tutor program for students whose resistance is the highest to completing their schoolwork during the after school program. Ideally, this plan would include tutoring sessions during regular school hours where the student and tutor would interact away from the distractions from the student’s peers. I feel the attempt of such a plan is valid because it eliminates what I believe is to be the main obstacle that keeps certain students from completing their work
Would you volunteer for this group again?
Definitely
For the time you spent, how much of an impact did you feel your work or activity had?
A lot
Did the organization use your time wisely?
Very Well
Would you recommend this group to a friend?
Definitely
What one change could this group make that would improve your volunteer experience?
I feel what this group did to make this a great volunteer experience is beyond what was required. They did a great job and asking them to do anything different to make my experience better would be asking too much. I would not change anything.
Did your volunteer experience have an effect on you? (teaching you a new skill, or introducing new friends, etc.)
Definitely. Like I mentioned previously in the review I believe I learned more from the students than they learned from me. Before the experience i did not know how good an adult feels by interacting with a group of middle school students on a regular basis.
How did this volunteer experience make you feel?
It made me feel like I was contributing to a purely good cause since it involved the youth of my community. Since they were middle school students it also made me feel energized.
When was your last experience with this nonprofit?
