When we lost our 13-year old chocolate Lab, we decided to look for another pup to join our family (me, my partner, and Buddy, our 8-year old yellow Lab rescue). We joined and completed numerous applications for shelters and rescues in Southern California, each of which has different dogs available. LabradorRescuers.org worked for us; we had a 'virtual' home visit where Donna, a LabradorRescuers.org representative here in the Coachella Valley spent about 40 minutes with us on Facetime, visiting and virtually touring our home to ensure adequate fencing and space. Once we had been approved, we started looking into available pups. Their website is exceptional, with photos of each available pet, and lots of information posted by the foster family, trainer, and anybody else with info about that particular dog. One dog in particular, named Bradley, caught our eye. Just under 1-year old and less than 30 pounds, he looked just like a miniature version of our Buddy (see photo). We spoke with Suzanne, his foster, and she invited us to come with Buddy to visit and see if we all clicked. A 2-hour drive to Solano Beach last Saturday, and we came home with the most wonderful little guy, who we've renamed Cooper. He'd been chipped, received his rabies and other vaccines, and had already had a training session. Adoption fee was $400 (a deal, considering his medical bills alone from when he was rescued in Mexicali exceeded $2500) plus a $150 training deposit, which they will refund to us when we provide them with proof that we have participated in a training program (we are). We've followed up with both Donna and Suzanne on several occasions, and they are always helpful and fabulous. I can't say how LabradorRescuers.org compares with other rescues, because they're the only one we've used, but I will say that I would use them again, and I highly recommend adding their website to your Favorites, and check it often.
