As a Board member and volunteer, I have personally witnessed how the life-changing, comprehensive services of WeCAN have helped people on their path to self-sufficiency. What makes WeCAN unique is that it is literally a one-stop service for those who need help with housing, jobs, medical bills, food, school supplies, etc. etc. another thing I truly love about WeCAN is the extraordinary efforts they take to preserve clients’ privacy and dignity. For example, the birthday shelf provides brand new gifts for children to bring when they’re invited to birthday parties, so they don’t have to show up empty-handed. It’s a small thing, but it is important to preserve the child’s dignity.

As a volunteer at WeCAN, I get to see firsthand how their comprehensive suite of services addresses the varied needs of all their clients. Whether your issue is utility bills, feeding your kids, finding work, managing a budget, or any of a variety of other obstacles faced by those in need, WeCAN has a service to address it.

As a volunteer with WeCAN, I was most impressed by their flexibility and innovation to continuously serve the needs of the community during COVID lockdowns. This was especially impressive as the need for emergency relief services grew by a factor of five or more due to layoffs, school closures, health expenses, and other impacts of COVID. Never once did I hear anyone say “We can’t do that.” It was always, “Let’s figure out a way to make that happen.” I am proud to be associated with such a vital and effective organization.

Great organization that provides comprehensive services (food, shelter, employment counseling, etc.etc.) to those who are struggling financially. The best part is that WeCAN works with their clients to achieve self-sufficiency.

I started at WeCAN as a volunteer jobs counselor. One of the folks I helped had some background in carpentry, so I helped him apply for a job at Home Depot. Two days later, he came through our front door and asked our receptionist “What does the number 8436720 (or whatever it was) mean to you?” Of course she had no idea. He replied, “That’s my new employee number at Home Depot!” He said this with pride and confidence, I knew he was on the way to self sufficiency.
This is just one example of the way WeCAN touches lives every day.
