Review for Ceiba Foundation for Tropical Conservation, Inc., Madison, WI, USA
Ceiba is a very committed conservation organisation working in areas of northwest Ecuador where little conservation actions have historically been undertaken. Their efforts to promote areas of conservation and sustainable use under management by local governments and involvement of local stakeholders might prove crucial for the long-term conservation of a transitional area between two globally important centres of endemism: the Choco rainforest of northwest Ecuador and western Colombia, and the Tumbes-ManabĂ dry forest of western Ecuador and northwest Peru. Conservation science has repeatedly suggested that ecological transitions are crucial for the conservation of evolutionary processes. However, the ecotone between these two endemic centres is largely overlooked in conservation planning and most of it is already lost due to agricultural development. Beyond the global importance of developing conservation actions in this important biodiversity area, there are several potential social benefits in a region under severe economic limitations, both through new sustainable production practices and education opportunities for local children and youth.
