So many thinktanks teach the ideas of liberty, but this one puts them into practice. I am inspired every time I read about how they helped someone battle unnecessary licensing laws to launch a career in industries such as tourism, hair-braiding, and baking. Many of our licensing laws exist solely to protect established businesses. Too many companies try to eliminate competition by getting regulations passed. The Institute for Justice helps the underdog get a foothold in his or her chosen career.

I'm equally impressed with their work on asset forfeiture. I remember one guy whose expensive truck was confiscated in what IJ proved was an over-the-top punishment for a minor infraction.

I read their newsletter more faithfully than I do my magazine subscriptions or online news. It's fascinating to discover how many of our freedoms are being trampled, and to find out that there are I J heroes who are doing something about it.
