I adore Uptown Stories! My review is as a former resident of the area they serve, a former employee, a donor, and a nonprofit professional with over 12 years of experience in the field.
The organization is a hidden gem in Washington Heights that deserves a bright light. The administration is led by a phenomenal, empathetic, hard-working leader, Kate Reuther. The best Executive Director I've had the pleasure of working with. I have worked at organizations with a budget 10 times larger that were not nearly as well run. The Teaching Artists are talented, dedicated, and members of the community.
And most of all, the service they provide, pay-what-you-can writing workshops where kids get to exercise their imaginations, develop facility with language, meet other kids from the neighborhood that they don't go to school with (especially in a still mostly segregated school system) is invaluable. I miss working there tremendously, but I am so happy to remain part of the Uptown Stories community as a supporter.
