The American Bird Conservancy conserves bird habitats throughout the Americas. Twenty-nine percent of North American breeding adult birds have been lost since 1970, an unsustainable loss that has put many species on a trajectory towards extinction if this trend is not reversed. ABC’s hemispheric approach is essential to reversing this loss since many declining North American breeding species are Neotropical migrants that overwinter in Central and South America, the area experiencing the greatest loss of vertebrate species. Unlike many environmental organizations, the ABC remains focused on the loss of biodiversity, the silent crisis that does not get enough attention or funding. ABC’s Strategic Bird Conservation Framework is a science based approach to conservation that is designed to reverse the decline of bird species in the Americas. It is the most comprehensive and best thought out conservation strategy that I have seen from any environmental organization.
