Review for HART for Animals, Inc., Accident, MD, USA

Rating: 5 stars

HART for Animals has benefited me and the community in many ways. Since my retirement in 2011, I have volunteered for HART for Animals, adopted my cats and dogs from HART, and have had my animals cared for at HART. Volunteering here is both inspiring and rewarding. I know the animals in our care get the love and attention that they need to become good pets in their forever homes. I have three dogs and a cat who came from HART.
HART serves the community by offering low cost spays and neuters, full service vet care, and a very good boarding facility. The premise is that the cost centers and fund raising efforts will support the mission of taking care of and finding homes for homeless animals. HART also transports animals (especially kitties) to other no-kill shelters in more populated areas, so they have a better chance to be adopted. This is done after they are spayed or neutered, been given an examination and preliminary vaccines at HART.

The community is also served by the volunteer opportunities afforded at HART. Pre-pandemic we had a children's reading program where younger kids could come read to the dogs and give them rewards for attentiveness. A two-step volunteer program for high school age kids and adults is ongoing and is where they first learn about care and cleanliness of the animals and the facility and then the second part...the interaction with the dogs and cats by walking, training, playing with them or by sitting with the shy ones. We also had an outreach program in the schools to help educate young children about the care and training animals need to have.

HART is an incredible organization.

Hart is a terrific place to volunteer. I have volunteered in various capacities for more than ten years . In the beginning, I helped out at Hart's spay/neuter clinic. Our low cost/no cost spays and neuters help to reduce the population of unwanted animals in our area and provide a service to the people in our community.
When our brick and mortar facility was built, I helped out at the front desk answering the phone and scheduling appointments. Hart has several cost centers: boarding, veterinary care, and grooming, and any money beyond expenses, goes to support our adoption wing. When the adoption wing was completed, I started volunteering there: walking dogs, playing with cats, and doing various office and housekeeping tasks. One fun thing I do is write thank you notes and encourage the people who have adopted from us to send photos and updates. The responses remind all of us that our mission of saving the lives of homeless and abandoned dogs and cats is working and that we are working or volunteering here to achieve that goal.
I must confess that over the years of volunteering, I have adopted three dogs and two cats. The veterinary care they have gotten since being adopted is great, and so is the grooming. I have never had reason to board my animals, but from the comments made by people who do board their animals, the animals are happy and well cared for while here.
