Review for The Marine Mammal Center, Sausalito, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I have been a volunteer at The Marine Mammal Center for 7 years. I work on animal care crews rehabilitating sick or injured sea lions, Northern elephant seals and harbor seals. Our crews work 7 days a week, day and night. During our pupping seasons our 800+ volunteers often work 10 hour shifts. We are priviledged to work alongside extremely qualified veterinarians and veterinary technicians. The Center is known world-wide as being the premier marine mammal hospital. The research that is done here allows us to understand what is happening in our ocean to cause these animals to sometimes be sick. The education department informs schools as well as the general public about marine mammals and their dependence upon healthy oceans. Without generous donatons from the public as well as private sectors, this important work could not continue. Our "patients" need food and medical care to be able to return to the ocean. The Marine Mammal Center is a most worthy cause. With your donations, our work can continue as we strive towards healthy mammals and a healthy ocean.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the percentage of mammals that are returned to the wild and the research that has helped with diagnosing illnesses and better ways of treating them.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

make sure all new animal care volunteers went through a shadowing and probation period BEFORE they were allowed inside the animal pens.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

being able to have hands on experience caring for marine mammals.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

fantastic, friendly, committed, and talented people who care about our oceans and the mammals who live there.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

start on the second phase of our modernization which would allow the Center to have more pools and more equipment so a greater number of mammals could be saved.

Ways to make it better...

everyone treated each other with more respect.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

acquiring the funds to forge ahead with the second phase of the expansion.

One thing I'd also say is that...

This has been and still is one of the greatest experiences I have ever had in my lifetime and I only wish that I had been aware of the Center long ago.

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

2009

Role:  Volunteer & I currently work on animal care crews.
