The Swiss NGO, Medair, with UNHCR and the GATES Foundation has a project to improve pit latrines in emergency humanitarian locations, particularly where there is not much water for flushing and cleaning. One improvement is to attach a seal mechanism to the underside of latrine slabs to exclude flies and smells. Field Ready took sketches produced by Medair and turned the concept into 3D prototypes. The results are good, so we are now doing a small production run. In the coming months these products will be field tested in 3 locations in Africa to see what difference they can really make.
