I learned about the Jubilee neighborhood through my church, St. Michael and All Angels a few years ago when my family volunteered a couple of weekends to help with small jobs to help the neighbors fix up their houses. My boys were very little, and I do not know how much we really helped. What we did do, however was become familiar with an area of town that we might not have been introduced to otherwise. Time marches on, and after those few weekends, we hadn't been back until recently when my now 4th grade son, helped host a Halloween Party for the families in the neighborhood. I was so moved by the positive growth in the neighborhood, that I immediately signed up to tutor and read at OM Roberts each week. I find myself counting the days until I can go back! Thank you to Carrie Clark, Director of Volunteers, for the detailed and enthusiastic tour that she gave me recently. She is a wonderful advocate for the neighborhood, and has a huge heart for the plight of this part of town. I think that her childhood in New Orleans and her exposure to the 9th Ward generated her calling to be a part of this community in such a positive way.
