Review for College of Adaptive Arts, Saratoga, CA, USA
Loneliness and isolation are features of disability not often discussed. Pre-pandemic, where did you meet people? Most of us were able to make friends from people we met at school, work or church. Now imagine you are not able to communicate in any socially acceptable way, and the only people attracted to you are paid helpers. Even before the pandemic, you would be isolated from most opportunities to make real friends, unless you were lucky enough to know about College of Adaptive Arts.
The imaginatively resourceful crew at CAA provides a diverse community for people with differences. It enables my son, lifting his loneliness and creating an opportunity for him to be with others who appreciate his presence. When he feels truly valued by others in this way, his self-esteem rises exponentially, rippling through his being in surprising ways. CAA gives him a chance to make true friends, and it also gives him opportunity to continue to explore his creative self in a way society has always denied and devalued people born with social and cognitive differences. It has changed his life in so many positive ways, and we will always be grateful. Thank you CAA!
