Review for Lil' Orphan Hammies, Solvang, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Lil Orphan Hammies is the main charity I support. This is because all of the money donated goes to caring for abused and abandoned potbellied pigs. Over the last three decades, Susan Parkinson has tirelessly cared for hundreds of potbellies, and helped place many more in loving homes. Lil Orphan Hammies has made and continues to make a difference in alleviating the suffering of these intelligent animals.

I’ve been a supporter of Lil Orphan Hammies for over 20 years; it’s my main charity. All of the money donated goes for the care and well-being of the pigs. Sue Parkinson truly cares about these animals and treats them with love and respect. Over the years, she’s rescued and/or placed in good homes thousands of potbellied pigs that were abused or abandoned by their former owners. Sue’s efforts in educating the public about the realities of potbellied pigs are also a part of her mission. There are few charities as sincere or as honest as Lil Orphan Hammies.

I’ve been donating to Lil Orphan Hammies for 25 years; it’s my main charity. LOH is one of the few charities I know of where 100% of the donations go to the intended recipients: abused and abandoned potbellied pigs. The money donated to LOH all goes to feeding and housing these animals, as well as to the cost of medical care. The sanctuary land covers more than 4 acres, so that the pigs have room to roam and are not kept in small pens, which is the case with some animal sanctuaries. The founder and director of LOH, Susan Parkinson, is personally involved with the daily care of her wards, and treats all of them with love and respect. At any given time, there are around 100 potbellied pigs in her care, which are a lot of animals to deal with, but they all receive daily care and attention. Ms. Parkinson’s work has received much notice over the years, and she and LOH have been featured in People magazine and several newspaper stories, and she has been the subject of several documentaries, including PBS’ Nature series (The Joy of Pigs), Jack Hannah’s Into the Wild, and ABC’s Piggy Love. In addition, she has appeared numerous times on and served as a consultant to the Animal Planet network. She is highly regarded as an expert in the care of potbellied pigs. For those of us who are concerned about animal welfare, especially with highly-intelligent animals such as potbellied pigs who are often mistreated and abandoned simply because they become something different than their owners were led to believe they would be, Little Orphan Hammies proves to be a godsend. LOH literally saves the lives of these animals, and gives them a safe and pleasant home to spend the rest of their days. I can think of no animal welfare charity more honest or worthy of support than Lil Orphan Hammies.
