I've been volunteering and traveling with Local Hope Guatemala for over 10 years. The opportunity to work alongside the indigenous Mayan population that lives in the area served by this organization has enriched my understanding of the culture and the people and, yes, I've learned a few things about myself along the way. The attention paid to the volunteer experience ..... an in-depth orientation, a focused approach to the work that matches my skills and interests with activities during the trip, check-ins along the way, and the follow up evaluations after we return home..all of these things combine to make a rich, well-curated, well-planned adventure where I feel safe, valued and appreciated. The love and respect this organization demonstrates towards its target population is evidenced in the changes I've seen in the community over the years. People are healthier as a result of the medical teams, they are more educated, more are employed. There are less measurable positive effects in the population, I'm certain, as a result of how completely invested this organization is in the community. I encourage anyone thinking of supporting this group through donations or travel to jump at the opportunity. So little can do so much!!
