I've had several great experiences with caring for dogs and cats while their owners are underway or travelling.

I don't have permanent pets because I don't have my own support network for when I'm travelling. So, between my travels I can get a temporary pet and help out somebody.

Through the website I've had seven pets. Two dogs for a full deployment in 2017. Two cats for a full deployment in 2020. One cat for half a deployment in 2018. And, two dogs for a 3-week work-up in 2019. All of those were Navy folks on ships.

The Dogs on Deployment network also lead me to help Marines on training, TDY, or reserves duty. One dog off and on in 2018. Three dogs off and on in 2019.

The pets are great companions. I miss them, but that's part of the program. I'm glad I could give them a good home while their owners are gone.

I've also volunteered for the organization at many outreach or fundraising events. It's good to meet like-minded folks.
