Review for Ecumenical Hunger Program, East Palo Alto, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I served on the board of EHP for several years, and have been a donor and volunteer. EHP is a wonderful place for families to volunteer together, especially at the holidays - kids from more affluent families get a chance to see how much they have to be grateful for, and to be reminded of how we are all human regardless of our circumstances. EHP is also a wonderful place to donate, secure in the knowledge that your donation will be used to help those in need rather than to line the pockets of executives. The staff, at every level, are paid modestly, administrative costs are kept to a minimum, and there is a strong ethic of using every dollar as carefully as possible in service of clients.

I have been a board member, board chair, volunteer, donor and Friend of EHP for over 20 years. It's always at the top of my donation list because I know how wisely and carefully every dollar I donate is spent. The services EHP provides - giving food, clothing and household essentials to families and individuals at no cost - are sadly much needed in the midst of the wealth of some of Silicon Valley. EHP staff and volunteers have a strong culture of treating clients with respect. The Board and Staff of EHP are always looking for ways to help client become self-sufficient while insuring that their immediate needs are met. This is an organization with a long and entirely honorable history in the community, richly deserving support, donations, and volunteers.

The Ecumenical Hunger Program provides the most essential services for those in need in a way that respects the dignity of each person. I was on the board for many years. It opened my eyes to the level of need in my own community. Interacting with staff, clients, board and volunteers taught me more about the power of faith than I learned in any other setting, and showed me the fundamental goodness and generosity of my neighbors - including those who were most in need. One of the things that struck me most was how often clients volunteered as a way of giving back, and how often they became donors when their fortunes improved.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I've seen the look on a mother's face when we delivered a holiday basket and filled her empty refrigerator.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Pay more attention to PR so that people understood both the needs and the opportunities to help.

Role:  Donor & I served on the board. It made me feel that I was truly a part of my community, not just a visitor. .
