Review for The Humane Society of McCormick County, McCormick, SC, USA
I worked for VCA Animal Specialty Hospital in Columbia, SC. One day this little shepherd puppy comes in and I see he's having a hind limb amputation. Of course I feel sympathy for the little guy, so I stick around to pet and talk to him. I ask the surgeon what's happening, and I'm told quite the story. His hips were horrible, his right leg had been fractured but the break had already calcified. His left leg had already had one surgery already, but the surgery didn't work out, so the only option was to amputate. After hearing the entire story of this puppy, I felt so many things: sympathy, anger towards the story of how he'd gotten hurt, surprise at how a puppy could be so brave and still so kind after all he'd been through. I fell in LOVE with this puppy. The surgeon suggested I adopt him. I thought about it as I went on with my day. I just couldn't get him out of my mind. This poor little soul had nowhere to go, no family, his healing process was going to be long and he just needed a forever home. So! I get the number to McCormick Humane Society and talk to Jeanie. She was very kind on the phone, but I could tell she's very protective of the animals, which I very much appreciated. After talking and getting to know Jeanie, she said she thought I'd make a great fit! So home with me he came! It was the "lets see if he is happy here" phase. I may have neglected to tell my husband that we have a new family member coming lol. My husband was weary at first. We have 5 cats and one other dog, but after about a day, my husband also fell in love with this boy lol. We named him Piers, and once Piers healed up, he was quite the happy boy! Hes very weary around new people, but we make a point to socialize him. Today, he is an unstoppable little tornado! He is wonderful and perfect! He brings so much laughter and love into this home! His best friend is our cat Drift, who was also a rescue I took home from VCA. Its like they know! He loves car rides, he loves running around and playing! Not too much of a bath fan, but its ok haha! Our other dog loves him, they play all the time, we go everywhere together. I haven't met Betty, who paid for his surgery, but if she reads this, please know that you are loved and we are very thankful for all you've done! You saved a little soul that is so beautiful and loving! From our home, Thank you!! We need more hearts like yours in this world!! I'm grateful for McCormick for giving us the opportunity to adopt Piers! These women are wonderful and they do so much and give such a strong voice to the animals in their care! We need more hearts like theirs in this world also!
