My story with Dolphin Care is now twelve years old. We vacationed there twice when my twins were young. They are now almost fully grown men. When they were small, it was difficult to find activities that would meet both my kids where they were--one child who was typically developing and one child restricted by physical and verbal disability.
Our two visits to Dolphin Care are now sweet memories of a childhood gone. Looking back, I wanted both kids to be engaged and have fun but more importantly I wanted my typical son to see that his life, although made more difficult because of his brother's disability, was also made richer by his brother's disability. Back then, it was his brother's condition that provided him the opportunity to swim with dolphins. Now, on the cusp of turning 18 is the realization that the disability has provided insight into the most essential truths of life. I remember learning that the dolphins go directly toward a person with disability. Maybe they already know what takes humans longer to figure out.
