Review for A Shelter for Cancer Families (ASCF), Houston, TX, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I am not from Houston, I live in the beautiful island of Puerto Rico and have been coming to Houston since 2018 for cancer treatment and checkups. Last January, 2020 I received news that I had a small recurrence and needed to stay for a while. For some, the second time around, in anything, might be easier because you know what to expect, but when it comes to cancer, this is definitely not the case. The second time around for me was scarier, made me more anxious, angry and I felt more alone than ever. And to make it more interesting, add a the covid-19 pandemic and you have a recipe for a mental breakdown!

That's where A Shelter for Cancer Families comes in. Their motto "more than housing" is a tremendous understatement. This foundation, their volunteers and the incredible ladies that lead it provided me with the love, compassion, understanding, time and care I much needed. Yes, they provide housing, a beautiful, clean, secure, comfortable apartment, close to supermarkets and pharmacies, but they provide so much more. They sent me flower for my birthday, presents for Valentine's Day and Fathers Day, Taco Tuesdays, volunteer doggie cuddles and so much more. You can always feel the love from these ladies, even during social distancing; with their masks, they smile with their eyes, they hug you from afar and even six feet apart, you feel so close to them you consider them your family.

For me, A Shelter for Cancer Families was an important part of my treatment and recovery, I am alive today greatly because of this foundation. I will be forever grateful and will work tirelessly to give back to them and pay it forward in any way I can. I love you ASCF!
