Review for Plan International USA, Inc., Providence , RI, USA
I have been a member of Plan International USA's youth advisory board for almost 4 years and I can confidently say that Plan's commitment to the elevation of youth voices is at the core of the organization's values. Plan has always ensured that it retain a position as a catalyst for change as valued by the communities it seeks to support. There is an incredible amount of diligence, time and resources put into garnering input and strategy from respective communities for every initiative launched by the organization.
Plan USA not only understands that community led work is essential, it seeks to foster that mentality domestically as well. Oftentimes my experience with the humanitarian space has been one in which US based international aid organizations see their presence as an injection of knowledge and capacity into international spaces, with minimal community consultation, and little desire to enable and address domestic injustices. Yet Plan, through programs such as the Youth Leadership Academy, addresses domestic crises and educates and enables youth into supporting their own communities while understanding global plights.
Perhaps most striking is the amount of accountability and transparency Plan International USA can offer to donors and constituents. The organizations spends a lot of time and diligence into ensuring that its donor funds go exactly where they are intended to go. Information is made readily available and managing funds responsibly so as to ensure donor and community trust, is at the crux of any and all programs.
All in all, Plan International USA has honestly changed my life. My experience on the youth advisory board has allowed me to delve deeply into the world of humanitarianism and learn from an organization that not only valued my input as a youth, but actually pushed me to contribute. Reaching the end of my university career, I realize how much leadership skills and knowledge I've amassed from working with Plan, and how much it will serve me as I seek a career into the international NGO space. I couldn't speak more highly of an organization.
