Review for Assistance League of the Bay Area, Houston, TX, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I've been a member of this chapter since 2016. I've served in various positions, including most recently as President, 2021-2022. Since I retired, I have spent many hours working in the various programs. The chapter has many dedicated members who work hard to provide benefits for the local community. School clothing was provided for 2,155 students in the area during the last school year. Food and other items were provided to 26 schools in an effort to provide nutrition and support to at-risk students. Ready for Work provided interview and job clothing to adults entering the work force. Join us; you'll be glad you did!

Review for Communities In Schools - Bay Area , Houston, TX, USA

Rating: 5 stars

As president of Assistance League of the Bay Area, I greatly appreciate our chapter's partnership with Communities in Schools - Bay Area. I recently participated in a task force during meeting of the board for its strategic planning. The commitment of the board in diligently seeking the best use of its resources for the students is admirable. I also work with the CIS student support specialist at one of the Dickinson elementary schools. Her requests for items which will nourish and support the students are on point. CIS-Bay Area provides invaluable assistance to the local school system.

Families in the Bay Area receive direct benefit through clothing, vision and dental care, and nutritional support for school-age children. Other programs also benefit the local community including Ready for Work.

I joined the chapter in search of something meaningful to do upon retirement. I began working in the resale shop, one of the chapter's fundraisers. The interaction with the customers allowed me to connect with those who actively seek to help others in the community, both by donating and purchasing items. I also worked shifts with Operations School Bell, including checking in students who arrived to select school clothing. The parents and students were appreciative of the opportunity to select clothing which would allow the students to feel self confident, thereby making their school days less stressful. As my family was economically disadvantaged when I was growing up, I fully understand the importance of such self confidence to students.
