Review for Israel Scholarship Education Foundation , New York, NY, USA

Rating: 5 stars

My name is Oded Mcdossi and I am an ISEF Foundation International Fellow. I am a sociologist of education, completed my PhD at Tel Aviv University, and currently, a post-doctoral Fellow at The Ohio State University. My research centers on educational mobility and stratification in higher education, with a particular focus on the wellbeing of first-generation college students (i.e., those for whom neither parent possesses a bachelor's degree or higher). I am particularly interested in integrational barriers, and difficulties of first-generation students compared with their more advantaged peers. Thus, my personal background as a Mizrahi first-generation student, my research, and ISEF mission overlap. In a perfect world, ISEF’s activities were unnecessary, but our world is not perfect…yet. ISEF’s support of students of disadvantaged backgrounds in their educational mobility and clearing the path for academic career seekers is something that will change Israel’s future.

ISEF’s support is not only in terms of financial help, which is very important and gives the opportunity to concentrate on research, but it is also even more important for the building of a sense of belonging to the academic milieu and overcoming the imposter syndrome. They personally know each of their fellows and their entire life story. This allows them to tailor personal academic advising and mentoring and to form a supportive professional network.

This review is being written in times of great uncertainty for me. The postdoc period is very stressful as future employment opportunities rely on personal research productivity. The global pandemic changed the original plans of my postdoc to a great deal and effort put into research has gone down the drain. Despite these times of unrest ISEF family was always listening, advising, and encouraging. They were always thinking about my needs and did everything to ensure that I stay on the academic track.

I am grateful for their support and proud to be a member of this organization!
