Amigos is well known in our community for its public events, including an annual "Blue Ribbon" event that brings together hundreds of elementary school children to talk openly and bring awareness to the very difficult topic of child abuse. However, the organization's less public programs, like those that bring together parents to talk about parenting and how parenting decisions affect the well being of children, get to the essence of the organization: to prevent child abuse before it even happens. Amigos' after school programs also provide children with a safe and secure environment in which to thrive because neglect is also a form of child abuse. As a board member, I've had the opportunity to listen to parents explain how Amigos has helped them become better, more attentive parents and the positive effect this has had on their children. When you hear those testimonials, you really appreciate the difference Amigos is making. We all hope that no child ever suffers from abuse and that is exactly the mission of Amigos: preventing child abuse and neglect before it happens by helping children and their families and educating our community.
