Early this year, I had the opportunity to take an awareness trip to Guatemala to meet my mom’s sponsored friend. We spent a week visiting local communities and learning about the work that Unbound is doing. I was so inspired by the children we met who were both shy and curious and quiet and outspoken. At one lunch, a young scholar student gave a speech about how Unbound had contributed to his studies and his ultimate goal of attending a four year university. We had the opportunity to share meals and converse and interact with the families. I admire that Unbound has centered the work of the mothers through CODIs, providing accountability and accessibility for the sponsored members and their families. I respect that the Unbound staff was incredibly transparent with their allocation of funding, as well as welcoming feedback to improve the business model. The experience was so positive and inspiring, that I decided to sponsor a child myself. I was even able to meet my sponsored friend on the last day of our trip, as he and his mother were not far from the city we were in. Unbound is an incredible organization that focuses on preserving the autonomy of its sponsored members and their families. I highly recommend this organization.
