Each year I happily anticipate Mujeres de Maiz local fund raising events because they are either fun, delicious, musical, inspiring, educational or all of the above. They are at once community outreach events and Mujeres family of supporters celebrations. And there is another component--I treasure updates of the programs and the young women as both mature over time. I love recognizing women I met as girls when I visited Chiapas some years ago; I cheer for their accomplishments such as university degrees, and I marvel at their creative ideas and energies in continuing and creating new programs to meet their current needs and those of their communities. And I'm in awe that this is happening because volunteers in my hometown care passionately about empowering women in a rural community who are discriminated against because of ethnicity, gender, and poverty.
