I initially became involved with the Southern Center because I knew the former executive director personally and learned that it is a group of extremely talented, hard-working people who are absolutely dedicated to fighting against injustices in the criminal legal system that primarily target poor people and minorities. I've been on the board for seven years and as I've learned more about the organization I've only become more amazed by what they are able to accomplish with not very many people: reversing death sentences handed down by all-white juries, freeing people with life sentences for non-violent offenses, changing conditions in barbaric prisons, protecting people being prosecuted for helping others vote, and on and on. I've never known a group of people more committed to protecting people who are oppressed by the criminal legal system and to building a better future.
