Review for Chewonki Foundation Inc, Wiscasset, ME, USA

Rating: 5 stars

The term I spent at the Chewonki Foundation, through their Maine Coast Semester program, was one of the best periods of my life, and certainly one of the most informative with regards to environmental issues and my own personal growth. Chewonki provides many services in the field of environmental education, including camps, trips, and outreach programs. My participation was in their school, which fulfills general "core" high school requirements while providing an in-depth exploration into the natural sciences, environmentally-focused literature, and communal living. Whether for only a day or over a period of months, the Chewonki experience is one that positively influences young people in Maine and all over the world.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

my own personal growth, local schools and communities, and leadership in environmental conferences.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

add a residency program for college and graduate students studying in fields related to environmental sciences and arts.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the experience of living, working, and learning within a close-knit and diverse community.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

always dedicated, and always helpful. The Chewonki community is full of enthusiastic people devoted to their cause.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

do great things in the fields of environmental education and outreach. It could truly become a leader in all its myriad undertakings.

Ways to make it better...

Chewonki had the resources to make Maine Coast Semester a fully-fledged school. I would have loved to study there longer than one term.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

fund-raising and, to a lesser extent, staff retention (much of the Chewonki community is made up of part-time and summer staff).

One thing I'd also say is that...

I can think of no organization more deserving of a grant than the Chewonki Foundation.

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

2009

Role:  Client Served & I was a student in the MCS program.
