Review for Meals on Wheels of Durham, Inc., Durham, NC, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I moved down here from New York 3 months ago, and I started up with Meals on Wheels Durham once settled in a bit. My duties include helping pack up the bags for the different routes and then delivering to the clients on my route. I thought volunteering would just help me get out of the house (I work from home) and get to know Durham, both the city and its people, a bit better; however, not only did I meet really kindhearted people volunteering, but I also met some of the warmest and friendliest people on my route with whom I have gotten to know better and better as the weeks go by. The time commitment is very easy (as little as an hour is needed), but the only downside is that it takes place during the AM business hours which may be difficult for traditional office workers. I hope more people will take a moment to check out MoW; it's a great organization that makes volunteering and contributing very easy and extremely rewarding.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the manner that my clients receive me. Every single one of my clients are so appreciative of this service as well as welcoming to a newcomer in these parts.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

up the number of volunteers. The organization itself doesn't seem to be bogged down with bureaucracy, as so many other groups, which is part of its charm; it makes it easy to volunteer.

Would you volunteer for this group again?

Definitely

For the time you spent, how much of an impact did you feel your work or activity had?

A lot

Did the organization use your time wisely?

Very Well

Would you recommend this group to a friend?

Definitely

Did your volunteer experience have an effect on you? (teaching you a new skill, or introducing new friends, etc.)

Met new people (both clients and fellow volunteers). Got to know Durham, both streetwise as well as a little history (from fellow volunteers and clients).

How did this volunteer experience make you feel?

Good - it's almost a selfish thing, because I get a lot of out this too!

Role:  Volunteer & I pack bags for the different routes and then deliver to "my" route 1 day a week.
