Review for Educational Pathways International, Incline Village, NV, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I am Frederick Owusu Gideon, a second year BSc. Medical Laboratory Science student in the University of Ghana, Legon (Accra).

As an Educational Pathways International (EPI) scholarship recipient, I am so thankful for the generous people who help make dreams happen for people like me. Their gifts are truly an investment in our futures. Like few other people, I am the first in my family to attend high school and University. It took one Mathematics teacher of mine who paid for my WASSCE registration fee before I could earn a successful graduation from high school. The cost of attending the university kept daunting on me and for two years I was not able to attend the university.

As the eldest child of my parents, the guilt of taking time and money away from my financially struggling family to pursue education is very real. The demands on resources for a single-income family of six are seemingly endless. Receiving the EPI scholarship has literally paved the way for me to finally be able to better myself, pursue my education that I am proud and help support my family. Having this scholarship has pushed me and given me the motivation to work even harder to excel at school.

At a young age, I didn't understand why humans died. Because of my limited knowledge and experiences, I presumed human's death to be a sleeping sickness. However, as I witnessed my best friend deteriorate to death in primary school, I realize that death was real. As I grew up, I realized that each one of us will pass away at some point in our lives as humans. I then expanded my knowledge beyond the academic setting, by starting and engaging in a research campaign to find the possible causes of death of humans. Of the information I gathered, Cardiovascular Diseases (CVDs) was the leading cause of most deaths in the world. Helping the humanity to reduce the risk factors for this deadly disease has been my vision and that is why I chose to study Medical Laboratory Sciences because not only would I want to offer disease sensitization programs to humanity but also diagnose them when there is a need.
In order to share my EPI’s benefits to other people other than my family. I have established a foundation where I and other health scientist students volunteer on our mission of helping the good health and well-being of people.

EPI also has an amazing ‘life after school’ programs. These training programs go the extra mile to help students succeed. Some of these programs include entrepreneurship, skills corporate organisations look out for, public speaking, becoming who you want to be and many more. The EPI staff member I have come in contact with has been more than willing to help me in a way that I might need it. Having a scholarship like EPI right here in Ghana is a huge blessing!

I am beyond grateful for the donors of EPI who make these opportunities possible for me and other students. Their generosity has given me an opportunity in my life that I thought had passed me by, turning a dream into a reality. Having the financial burden of education lifted from my shoulders and that of my family’s has given me the freedom to focus on what is important.

I want to thank the donors and benefactors of Educational Pathways International for the impact that their gifts have on the lives of many students in Ghana.
Thank you.
