Review for Self-Help International, Waverly, IA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I am not sure I can find the words of praise appropriate to review "Self Help International"! My husband and I have traveled a great deal in our lives. We are so aware of the opportunities we have had....our education, health care, a world view, financial stability, career choices, etc. Self Help has identified countries to do their work that have few, if any. The organization has the longevity of 60 years of experience and continue to adjust and adapt their services to meet the needs of those they serve.
I have traveled with them to both Nicaragua and Ghana and heard the testimonies of the local people who attest to benefits of their work.
During my first trip to Ghana in 2016, I witnessed the creation of "Teen Girls Clubs" to address the issue of keeping girls in school, avoiding unplanned early pregnancy, basic hygiene, some skill building. Over 400 girls have embraced these meetings. More very important needs have been identified and implemented, including weekly Reading classes to help them prepare for Highschool entrance exams. This past year the incredible, caring, local staff organized a field trip for over 160 girls from 5 different villages. The students were chosen by their commitment to the Club, punctuality to reading classes, and community service. Many had NEVER left their villages or experienced riding in a car or bus. They traveled to Kumasi, a city of nearly 2 million people and the capital city of the Ashanti region. It is a very important and historical center for Ghana. The agenda included visiting historical sites to learn the story of the Asante people and a Palace Tour. They also toured Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. One aim of the Teen Girls Cub is to see the value and strive for higher education. Here they witnessed first hand many women who had taken a chance and had the desire to do something meaningful with their lives. The last stop was a new shopping mall, one of the largest in West Africa. Another novel experience for Village girls! The positive feedback from this day of travel was overwhelming. It may allow Teen Girls to dream dreams they never knew....set goals, and work hard to achieve them!
Self Help is opening doors of opportunity for those they serve. Opportunity can make a difference in the lives of many!
