Review for WINGS Guatemala, Pueblo, CO, USA
I work for an organization called Population Connection, which advocates for increased funding for and access to voluntary family planning services worldwide. We partner with WINGS Guatemala because they provide direct reproductive health education and services to Guatemala's most marginalized communities. I recently had the opportunity to visit WINGS in Antigua, Guatemala, and was able to join their medical staff in several site visits, or 'jornadas', in which mobile health units transport WINGS staff and medical equipment to communities in order to provide reproductive health services such as tubal ligations, vasectomies, and IUDs, among others. I was incredibly impressed by WINGS's diligent and knowledgeable staff, all of whom worked tirelessly and with acute attention to detail until every last patient was seen. I spoke to one of the lead nurses about her experience with WINGS, and she told me, "Everyone who works at WINGS is passionate about what they do. We recognize how important our services are to the people and communities we serve, and that in many cases, we are the only provider of quality care. So, when a patient calls and tells us that they will be late to our clinic, we all want to wait to make sure they're seen. We know that if we don't help them, they likely will not receive this type of health care at all."
In order to effectively reach Guatemala's most at-risk communities, WINGS employs medical staff from the regions it serves. The organization recognizes the importance of employee-retention and is proud to offer salaries and benefit packages that facilitate long-term employee satisfaction. This non-profit truly embodies the meaning of a 'progressive organization,' both in terms of its work and mission, but also relative to the way it treats its employees. I also got the chance to talk with the Executive Director and Programs Director about WINGS's trajectory and about Guatemala's history and political economy more broadly, and left the meeting feeling inspired, impressed, and very grateful -- what a relief to know that there are so many passionate, capable, and brilliant people doing such great work in the world!
Thank you so much, Hannah! Our team loved having you join us and we are grateful to you for being a part of the WINGS family! ¡Abrazos!
