Review for New Jersey Coalition Against Human Trafficking, Inc., Short Hills , NJ, USA

Rating: 5 stars

The New Jersey Coalition Against Human Trafficking was formed in 2011 and is made up of over 180 diverse groups in the state, which include nonprofits, faith-based organizations, government agencies, academics, law enforcement, and direct service providers.

The NJCAHT works to serve as the hub of community efforts statewide to increase coordination and visibility of NJ’s commitment to end human trafficking.
The NJCAHT, became a nonprofit 501c3 in November 2016, and is a volunteer-run organization.

MISSION: To Unite NJ Communities to Abolish Human Trafficking

Working with NJ State Legislators, NJCAHT has supported multiple efforts to continually raise the awareness of the NJ population to the Trafficking epidemic and insure that victims get the information they need to get via both the National and NJ Hotlines. Informational posters now appear on the NJ Turnpike and Garden State Parkway rest stops, thanks to the offices of NJ State Senator Troy Singleton. Individual Coalition member organizations distribute hotline posters to retail, commercial and educational locations throughout various NJ counties.
Students from hundreds of high schools participate in spreading information via the Locker Slam initiative. These are brightly colored magnets with various informational sayings that are "slammed" onto locker doors during Advocacy week to spread awareness.
On May 6, 2013, Governor Chris Christie signed the NJ Human Trafficking Prevention, Protection and Treatment Act. Coupled with the measure, the Governor also signed bills designating each January as “Human Trafficking Prevention Month” and January 11th as “Human Trafficking Awareness Day”. Both the day and the month are marked nationally as times of human trafficking awareness.

On November 19, 2015, after working with the Coalition, a resolution was unanimously passed at the NJ League of Municipalities: Urging Local Officials to Provide Leadership in Ending Human Trafficking.
To support the almost 90 municipalities following this resolution, the Coalition produced a COMMUNITY AWARENESS TOOLKIT of ideas and resources.

Our Legislative Priorities for 2020 are:
Posting the National Hotline& Text Numbers in transit spots, bars, massage parlors (S1449/A931)
Expansion of "clean slate" (vacatur) laws (A5085/S3678) for trafficking survivors & creation of a diversion program (Trafficking Court) for victim support
Transportation Training Bill (A5703) so that transportation workers can recognize signs of human trafficking
