Thanks to the generosity of Feronia Forward, about fifty students from Abbott Memorial School were able to participate in a full day outdoor learning experience at Ramblewild on September 26, 2019. The staff of Ramblewild did a quick, yet thorough, clip system training on a mini practice course. It was the perfect way for each student to confidently learn how to use the system in a safe and practical manner. It really alleviated many of the fears that so many of them had about participating in the higher elements! Once out on the challenge courses, the amount of peer support, excitement, conquering of fears, team-building, reassurance, problem-solving, collaboration, and appreciation of nature that was experienced by EVERY SINGLE one of us was truly mesmerizing. At one point, a few of the students and I closed our eyes, just to take in the experience from all our senses. You could smell the outdoors, feel the light drizzle of rain, and hear a wonderful combination of noises, including the voices of everyone enjoying themselves. From this experience, we saw future linesmen/women, counselors, thrill seekers, engineers, biologists, and conservationists. Some of the best quotes of the day: “This was the best day of my life”, “I liked this even better than Nature’s Classroom”, “I can’t believe I did it”, “I am so proud of him for doing it”, “Look”, “Look at this”, “Look at me”, “See this”, and best of all “I’m conquering my fears” as he repelled past us! This was a perfect way to start the school year and build a wonderful connection with each other and the wonders of the woods. We ALL had a blast and are very thankful for the donation and opportunity that Feronia Forward gifted to us.
