When asked to lead a small team from my local mosque, arrange a hot meal and serve it to 300 people at a shelter, I really wanted to rise to the challenge and serve my community. But the task ahead was daunting. I was definitely stepping out of my comfort zone. My equally inexperienced team was to join two similar volunteer teams from other faith communities. The challenge to do all this and represent my faith and make positive connections with the other volunteers during several hours of intense interaction seemed overwhelming. How would it all work out..? I did not want to make any mistakes nor let anyone down. What kept me positive through all the planning stages and the final execution on the day was the immense and never-ending support of the Abrahamic Alliance and it's Executive Director, Rod Cardoza. He was available day or night for my endless questions in preparation. His deep knowledge of the faith groups, his phenomenal attention to detail, his pre-planning for the day (never have I seen such organizational skills!) and his sheer passion for what he believes in, was a true inspiration for all of us. Throughout the process, I never felt alone. And on the grand day itself, all the things we had worked towards unfolded beautifully. I have to say it was a lifetime experience I will never forget. Making connections with people working at the shelter, building bridges with other people of faith and establishing all that we have in common, it all brought tears to my eyes. And I'm so glad I did this. I hope to participate again and again, Lord willing.
