After I retired from a 40 year career in pediatrics, I realized I missed babies and working with new parents. It was always the most rewarding part of my work. Working as a volunteer with Many Mothers was the perfect outlet. I am currently serving my third set of clients. It has been a fulfilling and enjoyable experience to come into the home and interact with the babies and parents. Sometimes it is nothing more than sitting with a parent and discussing and listening to their feelings. Often, due to my experience in pediatrics, I offer practical advice regarding routine newborn and infant care. I also have engaged in simply watching the baby while a parent takes a nap or takes a shower. I have also been more than happy to assist an overwhelmed parent in routine housework. One client told me it was like having a grandparent (I'm 72) come by and offer a helping hand. Many Mothers is a worthy organization offering what oftentimes is an overlooked service.
