Ohio has long been a state in which the encroachment of religious privilege has threatened to undermine American principles of secularism and equality. The many religious right movements that operate in Ohio and influence its politics make the work of this chapter even more crucial. Many people do not understand that secularism and laws that protect it are as valuable to religious freedom as to non-religious peoples' rights. The rhetoric of the religious right, while it functions to obscure and confuse people on that fact, is misleading. Luckily there are chapters like AU Ohio that stand up to the bullies who posture as victims in attempting to grab power. My parents are both devout Christians and defenders of church-state separation. Thankfully AU Ohio is behind them and supports their principled politics.
