My Nonprofit Reviews
Review for Soccer Without Borders, Boston, MA, USA
I have volunteered with refugee and immigrant communities through several different organizations, and over my past couple years volunteering with SWB I have been truly impressed. SWB gives newcomer youth a place to belong - where their past experiences, stories, countries and cultures of origin and languages matter but are not barriers to connecting with other youth. Coming together around the shared enjoyment of playing soccer opens up other wonderful opportunities to support these youth and their families as they adjust to life in a new place. SWB's use of trauma-informed approaches, ESOL principles, and other evidence-based practices shows the intentionality and care with which the model has been developed to care as well for the youth they serve as possible. I have gotten to know one family in particular through my volunteer work as a family mentor, and it has been a true privilege to spend time with this family and walk through various steps of their adjustment together. I am thankful for SWB's presence in Baltimore and I know it makes this and other cities a more welcoming place!
