In 2018 my husband was deployed and my then 16 year old struggled. He got into some legal trouble. In 2019 he was given the option of community service and he chose the Leavenworth County Humane Society. We started in June of 2019 going twice a week for scheduled shifts and coming in to fill in gaps.
After a couple weeks I started seeing major changes in my son. His confidence was coming back and he was happy again. He was so proud to be helping the animals. I feel this is due to the staff and volunteers cheering him on. They have all been positive role models in his life. He has done a complete 360 and I attribute it to the shelter giving him the opportunity to volunteer.

My entire family now volunteers. It is the most screen free time we have been in years. We sometimes joke the shelter animals have it better than our own. The animals are so loved. The care taken for each and every one of them is phenomenal.

Within the first two months of volunteering I was offered a kennel care position and am now an employee. I had to resign from my position with the Department of Corrections when my son started having trouble. Crystal, the shelters executive director, offering me this has been such a blessing. I was so burnt out working in mental health, but longed for a paying career option. While I am only part time, I am always proud to say I work for LCHS. I try to sneak it into all conversations I have with strangers.

This may be the longest winded review in histroy.....it is so hard to sum up how much of a positive impact LCHS has had on us.
