Review for KIDS KICKING CANCER INC, Southfield, MI, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Where to begin, talking about the impact made by Kids Kicking Cancer? They have done so much to assist our powerful martial artist! Desi began her journey with Kids Kicking over 12 years ago when we learned of their program. After suffering a stroke in 2nd grade, it became necessary for Desi to receive transfusions for her Sickle Cell maintenance every several weeks. Desi, who had a MAJOR issue with needles, quickly became known as a dangerous kid after literally punching out several nurses! After a couple of classes with Sensei Richard and Sensei Peter, everyone was AMAZED at the transformation - which resulted in a hazardous materials clean up in the transfusion room when they were not prepared for the massive blood flow that resulted during phlebotomy while Desi powered breathed with her Sensei.

Ever since then, KKC has "had her back" as Desi likes to say. They accompanied us to various tests, transfusions, and hospitalizations, providing steady support to face and conquer any fears - including tutoring her through massive amounts of math homework!

Their program helped her build confidence in herself through the various demos she went on that allowed her to share her power by teaching the world. Also, they hosted many awesome fun events! Desi was thrilled to be there with other kids who were "normal" like her - someone else that liked doing kid things that just so happened to be fighting some health challenges as well.

As a parent, they've helped our family also by lending a helping hand. When your child is out of commission, that means you are off work. There were a couple of extremely lean Christmases where KKC stepped in and helped us make sure there were Christmas dinners and a couple of presents under the tree. The fact that their Senseis are all black belt professionals, that uniforms are covered and all events are at no cost to the child or family makes all the difference in the world. It gives a family dealing with harsh medical challenges something awesome and positive to look forward to. That can make all the difference in the world!
