Review for Diveheart Foundation, Downers Grove, IL, USA
I got involved with Diveheart a few years ago when I heard about an exciting opportunity to try scuba diving in Key Largo, Florida. I joined in because I, at the time, was terrified of water and decided I wanted to over-come this fear. What better way than to dive in head first---literally? The group was very patient, encouraging and understanding with all of our ability levels. We learned the book material at first, and then did some water work in the pool. Once we were all able to pass our tests (and I did my first successful and slightly fearless giant stride) we were able to test our skills in the beautiful clear open water! Since then I've conquered my fear of water, have developed many lifelong friends, and have tried my best to stay involved to help mentor and volunteer. Tears always come to my eyes when the programs are over---you wind up having a small family for those few days. I appreciate Diveheart the most because it goes beyond telling people with disabilities that we can do what we want --- it shows us our abilities are not limited in water. It helps show people who are not disabled understand that people with disability do things differently, but are not UNable to do anything! Diveheart has certainly made a change in my life. SK

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
I have been part of this program just about every summer.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
I would like to see this program get larger and grow beyond the Downers Grove hub. I think this program has a lot of potential to be significantly bigger. This also relies on the economy and many other factors, but in general I would like to see this grow
What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
The opportunities! It's also great for teaching or reminding people with disabilities that they're not unable! They're perfectly capable of scuba diving! It's also fabulous to prove to volunteers that disabled people are independent and strong.
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
The main volunteers are often very busy but find time to work with you. They are very knowledgeable and care about every person they meet.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
Work with a lot more people and branch out to more people with disabilities that don't have such fabulous opportunities.
Ways to make it better...
I didn't have such a hectic schedule =p
In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...
A small crew. They do a great job, but the program might need to start growing soon.
One thing I'd also say is that...
Nothing else needed to say =)
How frequently have you been involved with the organization?
About every six months
When was your last experience with this nonprofit?
2010
