Review for Wuqu' Kawoq | Maya Health Alliance, Barrio Patacabaj, Tecpán, , Guatemala
Wuqu' Kawoq is an excellent example of just how quickly culturally relevant and culturally competent medicine can make a real difference. The volunteers, staff, and supervising physician (Dr. Peter Rohloff) are all dedicated, determined, and moving towards fluency- if not already fluent- in both Spanish and Kaqchikel, one of the principle Mayan dialects, which makes for both a quality and accessibility of medical care that is entirely unavailable to many Guatemalans.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
I have not been a recipient of the clinic's resources or care, but have been personally influenced by Wuqu'Kawoq in that my experiences while volunteering in the clinic have reaffirmed my interest in working in Guatemala.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
...become a more active part of the organization, if possible. I have no changes to recommend, and am astonished at the amount of work that has already been accomplished.
What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
...seeing firsthand the people and situations that I had hitherto only researched, and witnessing the changes that a few committed individuals can make in multiple communities.
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
...dedicated, intelligent, multilingual and hardworking.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
...do even more to strengthen available healthcare in Guatemala, building on the culturally-applicable framework that they have already successfully begun to build.
Ways to make it better...
...I could have stayed longer, and helped more.
In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...
...the same facing those of any NGO; funding, and time. Energy, thankfully, seems to be in plentiful supply, thanks to Wuqu' Kawoq's dedicated set of volunteers.
One thing I'd also say is that...
...after spending the past year reading about culturally-irrelevant or inapplicable health intervention programs, I was very impressed with Wuqu' Kawoq's cultural competence, which, as logic would dictate, runs hand-in-hand with utility.
